Later this month, the latest instalment of the TV series – Eurocrash – is landing on Amazon Prime Video, as the trio head on a 1,400-mile journey across Eastern Europe. With stunts ranging from driving onto a moving plane to being shot at by horseback-riding archers, the special promises to be a high-octane watch for petrolheads and dedicated fans of the former Top Gear stars. In January this year, it was claimed that Prime Video, the on-demand video platform on Amazon, was set to part ways’ with Clarkson after his controversial, hateful column about Meghan the Duchess of Sussex, for which he apologised after sparking a record number of complaints. Sources told Variety that the streaming service wouldn’t be working with the TV personality beyond the series of The Grand Tour and Clarkson’s Farm that had already been commissioned. Following the claim that the streaming platform had cut ties’ with Clarkson, May has mused that The Grand Tour could be coming to a natural end’. The presenter said it’s difficult to know when to stop’ in TV Picture Prime VideoI don’t think they’d want to see any two of us try and carry on the thing that the three of us are known for together,’ he told LadBible. May added that he doubts’ a move to another platform would be likely. To be honest, I think the really difficult bit in TV, films, showbiz, you know, all that stuff is, is knowing when to stop. And most people don’t,’ he said. Most people keep going until they fly into a cliff… what you should try and do is land it and walk away. And I hope we can do that.’ May added It just wouldn’t be as good, to be honest, so, quit while you’re ahead. If indeed, we are ahead,’ joking that the stars were knocking on a bit’. reached out for comment from Amazon at the time of the reports of the company parting ways’ with Clarkson. Fans questioned why Lily’s character was constantly naked Picture HBO The show follows pop star Jocelyn who becomes enamored with self-help guru Tedros Picture HBOBefore the series even premiered, the show made headlines for the wrong reasons when a damning report by Rolling Stone claimed that the programme was in turmoil’ behind the scenes over the exit of original director Amy Seimetz. It’s said this led to multiple reshoots and script changes, with claims that director Sam dialed up the disturbing sexual content and nudity’ upon his arrival. Rising to unlikely social heights for the time, the celebrated violinist-composer and fencer found his life intertwining with that of Queen Marie Antionette Boynton, who welcomed him into her court, celebrating his talents, before an eventual falling out. Alongside shining a light on a previously ignored musical great, the film also looks at a hugely well-known historical figure in Marie, the actions of who here led Boynton on a journey of discovery about the queen which ended in what she felt was an earned’ villainisation of her. Chevalier opens with a dramatic violin off’ between Harrison who plays in real life as Joseph and a young Mozart, whose paths would have indeed crossed in Paris at that time. It’s not exactly a scene Harrison ever anticipated participating in during his career. Absolutely not,’ he told before joking that he was destined’ for it. Kelvin Harrison Jr as Joseph Bologne and Lucy Boynton as Marie Antoinette in Chevalier Picture Larry Horricks/Searchlight PicturesNo, no, I think even when I was about to do it – even after I watched it – I was just kind of like, what happened Kelvin? How did you get here? But I’m not mad at it, it looks pretty cool,’ he added. Much has been made of his rigorous preparation for the job on the violin, spending hours a day practising, and he revealed that he bought the instrument before he even knew the role was his. That was the first thing I did. I got the job – well actually, I didn’t even get the job yet and I still think I bought a violin! Because I was just kind of like, “I’m gonna get this job…” I’m just kidding.’ Even with that attitude though, the 28-year-old wasn’t quite prepared for the rigours of the role, which he joked were a nightmare’. It took five months, seven days a week, six hours a day, my dad [a professional musician] came up with the routine. And then I got to set, and that was a whole different story because I was working all day, then they would have me go to fencing training, which I was just like, “Are you kidding me?” Harrison spent hours a day honing his craft ahead of and during shooting to portray an exceptional violinist Picture Larry Horricks/Searchlight PicturesAnd then I finished that and then my violin teacher would be waiting for me in the living room with rosin to rosin the bow, and I was like, Here we go…’ It felt like it was, oh God, kind of a nightmare, but it paid off!’ With Marie Antionette, Boynton portrays a much less neglected figure in history and one who had her own issues to face in court as a woman, despite Chevalier not shying away from the brutally racist treatment of Black people in France in the late 1700s. Boynton explained to So much of her image, she was trying to be the author of how she presented [and] how she was perceived, so she was a woman of “more is more is more” kind of extravagance.’ However, the actress found a helpful practical history lesson in her elaborate costumes and corsets. It’s interesting, the contrast between the opulence and scale of the exterior versus the interior, which is as restrictive as possible for women at that time. And thankfully, as an actress now you don’t need to go that far, but it is interesting to at least experience that in the fitting – obviously when someone is tying it safely – because you realise how restrained you are in your movement, in your breath and the way that you can project your voice, even,’ she noted. Boynton was intrigued by the contrast between Marie’s extravagant gowns and surroundings and the restriction of her corset Picture Searchlight Pictures The cast includes Minnie Driver as Marie-Madeleine Guimard, star of the Paris Opera for 25 years Picture Searchlight PicturesSo that fed this idea of what a woman is, restrained and limited and quiet in all of those ways. [It was] a fascinating kind of version of the research.’ The Bohemian Rhapsody star, 29, was drawn to the project as a story that has gone mostly untold, wanting to educate myself on Joseph but also be a part of bringing his story to a broader audience, having been so wrongly erased from the history books’. The craziest thing about Joseph’s story is the fact that he is the son of a slave and a slave owner,’ Harrison chimed in. He was never meant to be doing all of these things according to what they wanted, what the expectation was of him, and through some extraordinary circumstances and his incredible gift, he ended up being this icon that we are literally making a movie about today because of the work that he did. And not just as an artist, but as a philanthropist.’ The actor feels that Chevalier does a decent amount of addressing the injustices of the racial dynamics of the time’, in which Joseph is shown being bullied at school, physically attacked, and openly discriminated against thanks to the hateful rhetoric of the time. He was never meant to be doing all of these things’, says Harrison of Joseph in eighteenth-century France Picture Larry Horricks/Searchlight Pictures The composer is shown facing the racism and bigotry of the time Picture Searchlight Pictures He observed that Boynton’s Marie Antoinette definitely leans into it’ too, joking that he still hasn’t forgiven’ his co-star. A lot has been written about the French queen, but Boynton said that leaving behind the preconceived ideas’ she – and the world – have about her was the most helpful part of her research – and remembering that she was just a young girl. She was 14 when she entered the French court, no 14-year-old should be put in that position of responsibility, and she had such a sheltered life,’ the actress pointed out. Her reputation is so specific, and she’s blamed for so much – and yet as a woman, especially at that time and in that position, you were told that you there are no real repercussions to your actions, you had no power. And then she’s put in this position where she realises the repercussions of that.’ Boynton reckons that doing away with prejudices was what enabled her to really drive home this version of her and what was specifically necessary for this story’. That did also mean looking at her as a villain, something she was reticent’ to do at first. Boynton checked all of her preconceived ideas of Marie Antoinette at the door Picture Searchlight Pictures The stars at the UK gala screening for the film Picture Karwai Tang/WireImageShe has been so historically villainised, but then it just made sense with this film – had she been villainised for what she does in [Chevalier], it would have been much more earned, and so having the licence to kind of really lean into that and into the remorselessness of that, was I think a very different side of her.’ Unsurprisingly, for a period drama set in pre-French Revolution Paris, Chevalier goes all out in its production design and level of detail, with its actors often bowled over by the cinematic scale. Recalling a specific day when she was wowed, Boynton picked an extravagant ball scene as she remembered walking onto the set and feeling totally absorbed in the moment. Karen Murphy, our production designer, did the most unbelievably intricate job of designing that environment, but then also having things like – all the flowers you see in a film are real. It was a completely immersive experience being on that set and in that environment. The sets and level of detail routinely wowed the actors Picture Larry Horricks/Searchlight Pictures Director Stephen Williams on set with Samara Weaving, who plays Marie-Josephine de Montalembert, Joseph’s lover Picture Larry Horricks/Searchlight Pictures Harrison and Boynton were fans of the fresh flowers in this ball scene, but other things were a little less… fresh Picture Larry Horricks/Searchlight PicturesAnd then also getting to do a scene that is the happier side of this relationship and the friendship side of it and the youth as well – I was able to just sit in it more and enjoy it and hang out.’ However, Harrison reminded her that the fish in the scene, piled on decadent food platters, were real too, causing a not-so-pleasant odour for them to be immersed’ in. I didn’t shower because they didn’t do that at the time… I’m method,’ he joked, seemingly wishing to add to the smell on the day. Because why would you want to wash off the oysters? That’s what that was…’ Boynton hit back. Chevalier opens in UK cinemas on Friday June 9. Got a story?
